Five Things You Must Know About Testosterone Replacement

  1. Testosterone has a direct impact upon the structural and biochemical components of an erection.  Testosterone helps regulate phosphodiesterase type 5 and nitric oxide synthase. Both of these are absolutely vital in the biochemical process of getting an erection. Testosterone also has a direct impact upon the compliance of the corpora cavernosa and low T can cause fibrosis of this critical structure. That why most urologists will test the serum testosterone level if patients who complain of erectile dysfunction and symptoms that suggest low T. These symptoms include low libido, or desire, fatigue, failure to concentrate, and central obesity.
  2. While adequate testosterone levels help to facilitate an erection, replacement of T as   monotherapy ( the only form of intervention) is usually not successful.  Erections are      complex events, with multiple necessary requirements, including neural, vascular and                  hormonal influences. Studies have shown that patients who have low T (hypogonadism) are more likely to respond to pde5-inhibitors when they also receive T support.
  3. 300 ng/dl   is the usual value stated for a laboratory diagnosis of low T. However, the value must be interpreted in conjunction with a patient's symptoms. There are multiple potential      treatment options for those who require testosterone replacement. T can be replaced with      injections, patches, gels, pellets, intra-nasally, to the buccal mucosa and now with pills.
  4. 300 ng/dl   is the usual value stated for a laboratory diagnosis of low T. However, the value must be interpreted in conjunction with a patient's symptoms. There are multiple potential treatment options for those who require testosterone replacement. T can be replaced with                 injections, patches, gels, pellets, intra-nasally, to the buccal mucosa and now with pills.
  5. Testosterone replacement is not without risks. While having a normal testosterone level       may facilitate getting an erection, improving concentration, increase bone density, and help reduce central obesity, there are also some potential complications. It has been established that  some men who undergo testosterone replacement will have concurrent erythrocytosis (increased red cell mass.) That can lead to a stroke or cardio-vascular event. Of all the different forms of testosterone replacement, injections have the highest risk of erythrocytosis.

At Uroshock, we like to promote healthy lifestyle choices. Opiate abuse is a horrific problem for so many reasons, the least of which is that it is strongly associated with low T. Diet, exercise, and sleep have all been shown to correlate with increased levels of natural testosterone production, and obviously improved overall health
